If you already have an AC system running on R-410A refrigerant, you don't need to do anything right now. Starting January 1, 2026, the EPA's American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act bans the manufacture and installation of new residential air conditioning equipment that uses R-410A refrigerant. That rule applies to new systems only, not to the unit currently cooling your Miami or Fort Lauderdale home. Existing R-410A systems remain fully legal to own, run, and repair for the rest of their service life.
The phase-out is part of a broader federal effort to move the country away from high-global-warming-potential refrigerants, the same kind of transition that phased out R-22 (Freon) over the past two decades. R-410A itself was once the newer refrigerant that replaced R-22, and now it's being replaced in turn by lower-GWP alternatives, mainly R-454B and R-32. Both are classified as A2L refrigerants, mildly flammable but engineered with safety features that make them safe when installed by a licensed contractor.
What this means in practice is simple: keep running what you have. If your central AC or mini-split was installed before 2026 and it's working well, there's no compliance issue, no fine, and no reason to swap it out early just because of the refrigerant change. Technicians throughout South Florida, including MGM, can still service, recharge, and repair R-410A systems, and will be able to for years to come as long as refrigerant supply remains available.
Where the phase-out actually matters is the next time you need a new outdoor condenser. Any new residential AC system sold and installed today uses an A2L refrigerant instead of R-410A, so if you're planning an AC installation, whether for a full system replacement or a new addition to your home, the equipment you get will run on R-454B or R-32, not R-410A.
One important rule: you cannot mix refrigerants or do a partial swap between an R-410A system and A2L equipment. The compressor, coil, and refrigerant lines in an R-410A system are engineered specifically for that refrigerant's pressure and chemistry. You can't simply top off an R-410A unit with A2L refrigerant, and you can't pair an old R-410A air handler with a new A2L condenser. When one major component fails on an older system, replacing just that piece with A2L-compatible equipment usually isn't possible, and the practical fix is a matched, full system replacement.
This is a real consideration if your outdoor unit is already 10 to 15 years old, which is the typical lifespan for AC systems in South Florida's climate, given how hard our units work nearly year-round. If your compressor fails on a system that age, you may be choosing between an increasingly expensive and harder-to-source R-410A repair and a full replacement with new A2L equipment. Coastal cities like Miami Beach, Aventura, and Fort Lauderdale add salt-air corrosion into the mix, and hurricane season storm surges and power surges can push an aging outdoor condenser toward failure faster than the same system would last further inland. That's a decision worth having with a technician rather than making under pressure during a breakdown.
There's a useful precedent for how this kind of transition tends to play out: R-22, or Freon. Production of R-22 was banned back in 2020, and today reclaimed R-22 often costs $100 to $150 per pound on the rare occasions a system still needs it recharged. R-410A isn't banned and won't disappear the way R-22 did, but it's a reasonable expectation that as manufacturing shifts toward A2L equipment, R-410A refrigerant, parts, and specialized service could gradually become somewhat more expensive over the next decade. That's a good reason to stay current on maintenance now rather than wait for a costly surprise later, not a reason to panic or replace early.
