AC Turning On and Off Constantly? Short-Cycling Explained

Short-cycling is when your AC turns on, runs for just a few minutes, and shuts off again — over and over — instead of completing a normal cooling cycle of 15 minutes or more. It's usually caused by an oversized unit, a poorly placed thermostat, low refrigerant, a frozen coil, or an electrical component failing. Beyond being annoying, short-cycling is genuinely hard on your system and can shorten the compressor's life significantly if it's not corrected.

Short-cycling is damaging because the compressor draws its highest surge of electrical current every time it starts, not while it's running. A system that's supposed to cycle four or five times an hour but is instead starting and stopping every few minutes puts far more wear on the compressor's windings and start components than normal operation. Over months, that repeated startup stress is one of the more common ways a compressor fails early, along with driving your FPL bill up from all the extra starts.

An oversized unit is one of the most common causes, and it usually traces back to installation, not equipment failure. A system that's too large for the space cools the air quickly, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off — but it does this before it's run long enough to properly remove humidity, which is most of what makes South Florida homes feel comfortable. Thermostat placement causes short-cycling more often than people expect. A thermostat mounted near a supply vent, in direct sunlight, close to a lamp or kitchen appliance, or on an exterior wall reads the temperature of its immediate surroundings, not the room as a whole. If it senses cool air blowing directly on it, it can satisfy the setpoint and shut the system off within minutes, even though the rest of the house hasn't cooled down yet — then call for cooling again shortly after.

Low refrigerant can trigger short-cycling through the system's own safety switches. As refrigerant drops, pressures in the system fall outside their normal range, and a low-pressure safety switch shuts the compressor off to protect it — then lets it restart once pressure recovers slightly, repeating the cycle. This pattern, especially combined with weak cooling, usually means a leak that needs a licensed technician to find and repair.

A frozen evaporator coil can cause the same on-off pattern for a related reason. As ice builds up, airflow and pressure drop, tripping the same low-pressure safety switch that low refrigerant does, which shuts the compressor down. The system then sits, the coil partially thaws, pressure comes back up, and it restarts — only to freeze and trip again a short time later if the underlying airflow or refrigerant issue isn't fixed.

On systems with a gas furnace as part of the setup, a dirty flame sensor can cause a similar short-cycling pattern on the heating side. This is less common in South Florida than in colder climates, since most homes here rely on heat pumps or electric strip heat rather than gas furnaces, but if your system does include one, a sensor coated in carbon buildup can cause the furnace to ignite and shut off repeatedly. A failing capacitor or relay can cause the same rapid on-off pattern on the cooling side as well.

Because so many of these causes share the same symptom, diagnosing short-cycling correctly usually takes a technician with gauges and a multimeter, not guesswork. Trying to fix the wrong cause — replacing a thermostat when the real issue is low refrigerant, for example — wastes money without solving the problem.
