Occasional clicking is normal — you'll hear one or two clicks when the system starts up and shuts down as the relay engages. What's not normal is repeated, rapid clicking that doesn't lead to the system actually starting. Squealing or screeching, especially on startup, usually comes from a belt or bearing issue on older systems, or a blower motor bearing that's worn out. Newer residential systems are mostly belt-free, so this sound more often points to a failing motor bearing that needs lubrication or replacement. A high-pitched squeal can also mean high internal pressure in the compressor, which is a more urgent electrical or refrigerant issue best left to a technician.
A hissing sound can mean a refrigerant leak or, less seriously, an air leak in the ductwork. Hissing near the indoor unit or refrigerant lines, especially alongside weak cooling or a coil that keeps freezing, points to refrigerant escaping the system, which needs a licensed technician to locate and seal. Hissing you only hear near the vents or in the attic, without any drop in cooling performance, is more likely just an air leak in the ducts.
Rattling is usually the easiest noise to diagnose and often something you can fix yourself. Loose screws on an access panel, dead leaves or small debris rattling around inside the outdoor unit's cage, or a satellite dish mount or fence panel vibrating nearby can all sound like it's coming from the AC. Tighten visible panel screws and clear debris from around the outdoor unit before assuming it's a bigger issue.
